How often should I get my pet groomed?

Grooming depends on the breed of dog have. Breeds like Cocker Spaniels, Malteses, Shih-Tzus, Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Lhasa Apso's, etc... should be groomed at the very least twice a year, but you should always strive for 3-4 times a year. Brushing should done at least every second day, with nail trimming at least once a month. If you are unsure about whether or not your dog should be groomed, it's best to contact a groomer for specific breeds about grooming.

How can I make grooming my own pet a pleasant experience for both of us?

Grooming isn't as easy as it sometimes seems; seeing as it's a fun thing and should be an enjoyable experience for both you and your pet as it is helping your pets overall health. Ways to make sure that grooming is enjoyable is to first start from puppyhood as puppies grow accustomed to the routine and products used through scent, noise, touch etc... It is vital 3 times a week to brush, moisturize the pads, clean ears and eyes, and also to brush their teeth once a week. If they are a longhaired breed, a bath every 4 months with a good clip would suffice, shorthaired breeds bathed around every 4 months. This will help eliminate excess oils such as dirt and debris as well as prevent fleas, mites, skin infections, itchiness, irritability, and make your dog look and feel revitalized overall. Try to remain patient and calm with older dogs, and if you have trouble feel free contact your groomer. If you suspect or see behaviour issues when it comes to anything grooming related consult a groomer or vet because safety should be considered first with some behaviours for both you and your pet. If you are unsure about your experience with grooming certain behaviours and or breeds contact your local vet or a groomer for further questions about your experience, dog behaviour etc... It is key to make sure you understand your dog and his communication toward you as well as your experience with the groom, your safety, and understanding your pet fully. Grooming is not easy for our canine companions as they are not used to our humanized approach so take it slow, learn, and relax. Just enjoy grooming your dog.
